Royal Tombs (Mala'ekula)

Walled red-gravel field where every Tongan monarch since 1893 is buried.

The royal burial ground of Tonga since 1893, set in a fenced enclosure in the centre of Nuku'alofa near the Basilica of St Anthony of Padua. The walled rectangle is filled with red volcanic gravel from which the central tombs rise; King George Tupou I, who unified Tonga and gave the country its constitution, lies in the largest.

The tombs are not open to the public, but you can view them from outside the railings. Treat the site with respect — long skirts or trousers, no climbing the fence, no flying drones overhead.

A story
Mala'ekula means 'red square' — the entire enclosure is kept covered in crushed red volcanic gravel. Every Tongan monarch since King George Tupou I has been laid to rest here, including King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV in 2006, whose funeral drew nearly half the country.
