Nui is one of Tuvalu's nine atolls, located roughly in the centre of the island chain. It is among the more isolated of the group, with a small population spread across a few islets around the lagoon. The main community is the village of Tanrake.
Nui has an unusual linguistic history — the local dialect is closely related to Kiribati (I-Kiribati) rather than to the Tuvaluan spoken on most of the other islands, suggesting earlier settlement patterns distinct from the rest of the country.
Access is by the inter-island vessel that circles Tuvalu on a roughly fortnightly schedule from Funafuti. Facilities are extremely basic — no tourist infrastructure exists, and visitors who come do so to experience genuinely remote Pacific island life.
