Diving the Reefs

The fringing reefs around Anatom are among the most pristine in southern Vanuatu. The diving is rewarding — good coral cover, excellent visibility, and diverse fish life. There are no dive operators based on the island itself; visiting divers typically arrange everything through liveaboard vessels or through operators in Port Vila before travelling south.

The waters around the island include deep walls, coral gardens, and pass dives. The remoteness means conditions are not monitored as regularly as at tourist centres, so liveaboard experience and self-sufficiency are important. Macro photographers in particular will find the reef rewarding.

A story
Anatom's reefs have seen very little diving pressure compared to sites further north in Vanuatu, which means the marine life is relatively undisturbed. The island was heavily depopulated by disease after European contact — from an estimated 12,000 people in 1800 to just a few hundred by 1900. The reef has been recovering alongside the slowly growing human population.
