Big Nambas Villages

The Big Nambas live in the high country of the northwest interior, around Amok and the Mae plateau. Their last hereditary high chief converted to Christianity only in 1948, and the area was effectively closed to outsiders until well into the 1970s.

Like the Small Nambas, the Big Nambas keep elaborate kastom traditions — magic stones, grade-taking ceremonies, dances around carved tamtam slit drums. Trekking up to one of these villages from the coast typically takes a day; you stay overnight and walk back the next.
