Wala Island

A small island just off the northeast coast of Malakula, used as a port of call by South Pacific cruise ships. On non-cruise days it is a quiet village with a long beach and a friendly population accustomed to outside visitors.

The reef immediately offshore is shallow and good for snorkelling. Walking around the island takes under an hour and gives a glimpse of village life — gardens of taro and yam, outrigger canoes pulled up on the sand, copra drying on rough wooden frames.
