Lake Altaussee

A small, brilliantly green lake set in a bowl of forested mountains, fed by snowmelt from the surrounding Dachstein and Totes Gebirge ranges. The water is famously clear and cold, the colour shifting from deep turquoise in the shallows to bottle-green in the centre.

A 7.5km path circles the lake, mostly flat and easy. Rowboats can be hired by the hour from the small wooden boathouse on the southern shore. In summer there is one designated swimming area; in winter the lake sometimes freezes over and is used for ice-fishing. No motorised boats are permitted, which keeps the surface still and the silence intact.

A story
The Austrian poet Hugo von Hofmannsthal, the composer Gustav Mahler, and the writer Jakob Wassermann all spent summers writing here in the early 20th century; Hofmannsthal's nearby villa is still used by his family. Locals refer to the village's small literary cluster as the 'writer's beach.'
