Loser Plateau

The high karst plateau north of Altaussee, reached by a steep panoramic road (the Loser-Panoramastrasse) or, in summer, by a chairlift from the village. From the road's end at about 1,600 metres, hiking trails run across a moonscape of bare limestone, sparse meadows, and shallow karst lakes — most notably the Augstsee, a small alpine tarn.

The 1,838-metre summit of the Loser itself is a 90-minute hike from the road. Views stretch across the Dachstein massif, the Totes Gebirge, and back down to the green of Altaussee far below. In winter the plateau is a small, family-oriented ski area with a few easy runs; in summer it's prime hiking and paragliding country.
