Damüls-Mellau Ski Area

The Bregenzerwald's main ski resort — good snow record, quieter than the major Tyrolean areas

Damüls-Mellau is the Bregenzerwald's largest ski area, connecting the villages of Damüls and Mellau across a linked network of lifts and runs. Damüls, at around 1,430 metres, claims one of the best snow records in the Alps — it sits in a position that catches moisture from both the Atlantic and the south, giving it reliable snowfall from December through March.

The resort has around 65 kilometres of marked runs, ranging from gentle blues for beginners to steeper blacks above the tree line. It is significantly quieter than the major Tyrolean resorts — no après-ski circus, no celebrity culture — which is either a disadvantage or the point, depending on what you're looking for. Day passes are good value by Austrian standards. The connecting Bergbahn from Mellau (also useful in summer for walking) gives access to the Kanisfluh viewing area.
