Hittisau Women's Museum

Austria's only museum dedicated to women's history and culture, in the village of Hittisau

The Frauenmuseum Hittisau (Women's Museum) in the village of Hittisau is the only museum in Austria dedicated entirely to women's history and experience. Founded in 2000, it presents changing exhibitions on themes of gender, history, art, and culture, with a particular emphasis on the lives of women in the alpine region. The museum has developed an international reputation despite — or perhaps because of — its remote location in a small Bregenzerwald village.

The building itself is an example of the contemporary Vorarlberg timber architecture that the region is increasingly known for. The permanent collection examines local women's domestic and working lives over several centuries; the temporary exhibitions have ranged from feminist art to investigations of women in specific historical contexts. Worth the short detour from the main valley road, especially for visitors interested in either feminist history or alpine culture.
