Freistadt Castle was built in the late 14th century to strengthen the town's defences. Its tall bergfried still gives the northern edge of the old town a fortified weight.
Today the complex houses the Mühlviertel Castle Museum, with local history and craft collections. The approach through the Gothic archway is part of the appeal, especially if you have just walked in from the main square.
