Hauptplatz

Rectangular medieval main square lined with protected townhouses and the Baroque St Mary's Fountain.

Freistadt's Hauptplatz is the old town's living room, a long rectangular square laid out when the town was founded in the 13th century. Protected facades, the town hall, and the parish church frame the space, with St Mary's Fountain standing near the middle.

It is the natural place to start because the town's logic is clear from here: trade route, market square, gates, walls, and castle all close together.
