Karnischer Höhenweg

The Karnischer Höhenweg is a high-altitude ridge trail that runs east along the Italian border from the Sillianer Hütte above Hochpustertal toward the Austrian-Slovenian border. It is one of the great long-distance walks in the Alps, traversed in five to seven days with overnight stops in mountain huts.

The path stays mostly above the tree line on grassy crests, with views into both Austria and Italy and constant reminders of the Great War: bunkers, supply roads, cemeteries. The Sillianer Hütte is the most popular access from the Hochpustertal side, reached by cable car and then a short walk.

A story
The trail follows the front line where Austro-Hungarian and Italian troops fought between 1915 and 1918. Trenches, dugouts, and gun emplacements are still visible on the ridge — some so well preserved that you can still find ration tins and bullet casings in the scree.
