KTM Motohall

The KTM Motohall in Mattighofen is one of the better brand museums in Austria — well-designed, visually engaging, and honest about the company's complicated history. KTM was born here and still manufactures here, and the building is designed to show visitors the production line as well as the history. The three-storey experience centre takes you from the company's post-war origins through its bankruptcy and revival to its current status as the largest motorcycle manufacturer in Europe.

For anyone interested in motorcycles, the collection of vintage KTM racing bikes and road machines is genuinely impressive. Even visitors with limited interest in motorcycling will find the story of a small Austrian factory becoming a global brand instructive. The site also includes a test track for KTM customers, factory tours (bookable separately), and a shop with more than the usual brand merchandise. It is a legitimate destination for a half-day visit.

A story
KTM was founded in 1934 by Hans Trunkenpolz as a metalworking and repair shop. After World War II he began making motorcycles, and the first KTM motorcycle rolled off the production line in 1953. The company went bankrupt in 1991 and was revived by Stefan Pierer, who turned it into one of the world's most successful off-road motorcycle brands. The entire story is told in the Motohall, which also houses the factory floor visible through viewing windows.
