Mattighofen Market Square

Mattighofen's Marktplatz is a well-preserved Upper Austrian market square, typical of the region's small towns — relatively wide, lined with painted 17th- and 18th-century facades, and still functioning as a genuine market twice a week. The parish church of Saint Rupert at one end of the square has Romanesque origins, though most of what you see dates from later rebuilding. The overall effect is tidy without being sanitised.

The square is a comfortable place to stop for a coffee and watch the town going about its business. There are a couple of traditional cafes and one or two restaurants around the perimeter. The town is not a major destination in its own right, but the market square gives it more character than the average small Austrian provincial town.
