The parish church of the Assumption of Mary is the building that gives Weißenkirchen its name and skyline. Its late Gothic body and high defensive tower sit inside a largely preserved fortification, built when Danube villages had to think about raids as much as harvests.
It is worth approaching from below, through the tight lanes, so the church appears gradually over walls and tiled roofs. Inside, the mix is typical of Austria: Gothic bones, Baroque fittings, and the feeling that the building has been altered by every century that needed it.
