The Red Bridge is the main land crossing between Azerbaijan and Georgia, and the old bridge it is named after — a fine 17th-century brick arch on Persian foundations — still stands in the strip between the two border posts. The masonry is a deep, weathered red; the engineering is good enough to have outlasted three empires.
Vehicles cross on the modern TRACECA bridge a short way upstream, built with EU money in 1998 to replace the old one. The crossing is usually quick if you are travelling by car or marshrutka — busier and slower at weekends. It is about 40 km north-west of Agstafa town, easy as a day trip if you happen to be in the area.
