Orthodox Church

The Russian Orthodox church in Goytepe was built to serve the garrison community during the imperial period and now stands semi-abandoned — the Christian congregation that once worshipped here has long since departed. The building itself is in a state of quiet decay: the exterior is intact but the interior is no longer maintained for worship. It is one of dozens of Russian Orthodox churches in Azerbaijan that have been left in this liminal state since the Soviet collapse emptied the towns of their Russian populations.

You can view the exterior freely. The church is not locked in any formal sense but there is no organised access to the interior. Photographing the structure against the background of the surrounding wooden Russian houses makes for an unexpectedly atmospheric stop on the southern road.
