Jewish Cemetery

Krasnaya Sloboda's Jewish cemetery spreads across the hillside at the northern edge of town and is one of the most evocative places in the settlement. The headstones range from simple flat slabs with Hebrew inscriptions to elaborate carved monuments erected by wealthy families, many of them funded from abroad. The inscriptions are in Hebrew, Judeo-Tat, and sometimes Russian.

Walking through the older sections gives you a sense of how long the Mountain Jewish community has been rooted here — some graves date back several centuries. The newer sections show a different story: large, expensive memorials commissioned by emigrants who have done well in Israel, Moscow, or New York, and want to honour their ancestors back in the Caucasus.

The cemetery is freely accessible. Behave with appropriate respect.
