The Six Dome Synagogue is Krasnaya Sloboda's most distinctive building — a large, well-maintained synagogue whose six domed roofs give it an Ottoman-influenced silhouette quite different from what you might expect in the eastern Caucasus. It was built in the late 19th century to serve the Mountain Jewish community and remains an active place of worship.
The interior is decorated with carved woodwork and colourful painted panels. The building has been restored with funds sent by community members who emigrated to Israel and the United States, and the quality of the restoration shows. Modest dress is expected if you wish to look inside.
The synagogue stands a few minutes' walk from the footbridge into Quba, making it easy to combine with a visit across the river.
