The Church of the Dormition, usually referred to in English as Vitebsk's Assumption Cathedral, stands on a high bank above the Western Dvina. Its bright Orthodox silhouette is one of the city's most visible landmarks and gives the surrounding old-town streets a clear focal point.
The present building is a reconstruction of an older cathedral tradition on the site, so the value of a visit is partly architectural and partly urban. Come for the views, the river setting, and the way the cathedral anchors Vitebsk's historic center.
