The Karmel (Carmelite) monastery sits on the southern edge of Essen, surrounded by gardens and woodland. It is a working community of Discalced Carmelite friars, but parts of the complex are open to visitors — the chapel, the gardens, and a small visitors' centre.
The monastery is best known as the home of Father Anastase, a Flemish Carmelite mystic of the early twentieth century whose writings on contemplative prayer drew a quiet following across Belgium and the Netherlands. The site has a peaceful, slightly old-fashioned air, and the surrounding paths are pleasant for a short walk if you happen to be passing.
