Grand Casino Knokke

Address Zeedijk-Albertstrand 509, 8300 Knokke-Heist

Belgium's most glamorous seaside casino, built on the Albertstrand seafront in a style that mixes Art Deco and modernist grandeur. The casino has been a gathering place for the Belgian and European upper classes since the early 20th century, and the interior reflects that history: chandeliers, marble floors, and an extraordinary collection of commissioned art that includes a Magritte mural, works by Paul Delvaux, and pieces by Keith Haring and other international names.

Non-gamblers are welcome to walk through the public areas and view the art collection during opening hours. The casino also hosts concerts and cultural events throughout the year. The building's position on the seafront, with the dunes on one side and the promenade on the other, makes it Knokke's most distinctive landmark.

A story
In 1953, the casino commissioned René Magritte to paint a mural for the main hall. Magritte produced Le Domaine Enchanté — an eight-panel work covering 72 square metres, featuring the floating men in bowler hats, the giant green apple, and other recurring images from his paintings. It remains one of his largest works and one of the few you can see in its original architectural setting.
