Het Anker Brewery

Working family brewery on a Beguine convent site, home of Gouden Carolus

Het Anker is one of the oldest continuously operating breweries in Belgium and the only one based inside Mechelen's medieval centre. The 90-minute guided tour runs through the working brewery — copper kettles, the modern fermentation hall, the bottling line — and ends with a tasting of the Gouden Carolus range: the dark, raisin-rich Classic, the strong tripel, the Easter beer, and the cuvée matured in their own whisky casks.

There is also an attached café-brasserie and a small hotel inside the brewery complex, useful if you plan to do the tasting properly. Tours run several times a day and should be booked in advance.

A story
The brewery sits on the grounds of the old Mechelen Beguinage, where Beguine women brewed beer for the community from the 15th century onwards. Het Anker took over the licence and the buildings in 1873 and is still in the same family. Their flagship Gouden Carolus Classic is named after the gold coins minted by Charles V — who grew up a few streets away.
