The Sint-Walburgakerk dominates one side of the Grote Markt, a great hulk of late-Gothic brick with a tower that was never finished — the foundations were laid for a much grander structure, and the truncated tower is what was actually built. The interior is correspondingly cavernous: tall, plain, brick, with a few fine pieces of seventeenth-century woodwork, the chair from which Archduke Albert is said to have led the prayers during the Spanish siege of Ostend, and a notable Baroque pulpit.
The Procession of Penitence sets out from here every year on the last Sunday of July. The church is open most afternoons in summer; in winter ask at the tourist office on the square for opening times.
