Burgas Art Gallery

The Burgas Art Gallery occupies a former Jewish synagogue and is one of the oldest provincial art galleries in Bulgaria. The permanent collection focuses on Bulgarian fine art from the late 19th century onward, with particular strength in works by artists connected to the region. Temporary exhibitions are held throughout the year. The building itself — a synagogue that was converted after the Jewish community emigrated to Israel in the late 1940s — is architecturally interesting.

A story
The art gallery is housed in a former Jewish synagogue built in 1909. Burgas once had a substantial Jewish community, part of the broader Sephardic diaspora that spread across the Ottoman Balkans after the expulsion from Spain in 1492. The community declined sharply in the 20th century; the synagogue found a second life as a gallery in 1946.
