Bolata Cove

Bolata is a small, dramatic cove tucked into the cliffs about 3 km north of Cape Kaliakra. A narrow river runs down a steep ravine to a crescent of sand at the head of the bay — protected as a nature reserve for both its archaeological remains and its rare seabird colonies.

The walk down from the parking area takes 10 minutes. The water is sheltered and good for a swim, with the cliffs framing the bay on both sides. It is busy in July and August with day-trippers from Albena; outside the season it is one of the quietest spots on the Black Sea coast.

A story
Bolata Cove is the only place along this stretch of cliff where the rock gives way to a beach. The Romans cut a small harbour into the side of the gorge here, and the foundations of an early Christian basilica are still visible above the sand.
