Guernsey Museum and Art Gallery

The Guernsey Museum and Art Gallery occupies a handsome Victorian bandstand structure in Candie Gardens, looking out over the town and the harbour below. The collection covers the full history of the island, from prehistoric finds and Roman-period objects through the medieval period, the German Occupation of World War II, and into the present.

The Occupation section is particularly strong. Guernsey was the only part of the British Crown dependencies to be occupied by Nazi Germany during World War II — from June 1940 to May 1945. The museum documents the hardships of civilian life under occupation through photographs, personal accounts, ration books, and everyday objects that tell the story better than any textbook account. This was the closest the Nazis ever got to occupying British soil, and Guernsey takes the memory seriously.

The art gallery holds a collection of island-related works and hosts temporary exhibitions. Admission is modest and the setting in Candie Gardens makes a visit here a natural combination with a walk through the grounds and a look at the Victorian greenhouse.
