Brijuni National Park

The Brijuni Islands — 14 islands and islets in an archipelago just offshore from Fazana — are among the most beautiful places on the Adriatic coast. Access is only possible by boat from Fazana, and visitor numbers are controlled to protect the national park. The main island, Veliki Brijun, has Bronze Age ruins, Roman villa remains, Byzantine forts, and a remarkable safari park that traces back to Tito's presidency.

Tours from Fazana run daily in summer, with both half-day and full-day options. The national park boat service is the standard approach; private charter is also possible. Bring swimwear — the waters around the islands are clear and there are designated swimming spots. The island restaurant serves fresh seafood and local wine.

A story
Josip Broz Tito used Brijuni as his presidential retreat from 1947 until his death in 1980, meeting foreign heads of state on the islands. Over 90 world leaders visited. The islands still carry the atmosphere of a privileged enclave — golf courses, a safari park with animals gifted by foreign governments, and 1950s Modernist villas. The safari park's animals are descendants of gifts from Haile Selassie, Indira Gandhi, and Fidel Castro.
