Biokovo Mountain Views

The Biokovo mountain range rises almost directly behind Gradac, its grey limestone ridges climbing from the coast to over 1700 metres in a series of steep terraces. From the beach, the contrast between the flat blue sea and the craggy mountain wall is one of the most dramatic landscapes on the Dalmatian coast.

The Biokovo Nature Park is accessible by car from the mountain road above Makarska, about 20 kilometres north of Gradac. Day hikers can reach the summit plateau where the views extend to Italy on a clear day. The park charges an entry fee. For those without transport, the view from the beach itself — particularly in the late afternoon when the rock face catches the western light — requires no effort at all.

A story
The Biokovo massif reaches 1762 metres at its highest point, Sveti Jure, making it visible from the islands of Hvar and Brač on clear days. In spring the slopes above Gradac are covered with wild sage, which local people have harvested for centuries to make the strong herbal brandy known as travarica.
