Franciscan Monastery

The Franciscan Monastery sits at the end of the long western seafront walk, on a promontory shaded by old cypress trees. Founded in 1461, it survived the Ottoman raids that flattened much of Hvar Town and has been continuously inhabited by the order ever since.

The small museum next to the cloister is the real reason to visit: it holds the Last Supper of Hvar, an enormous painting attributed to Matej Ingoli of Rovigno, along with a treasury of illuminated manuscripts, ancient charts, and an early Greek edition of Ptolemy. The cloister itself, with a 250-year-old cypress in the middle and the sea framed through the arches, is one of the loveliest spots on the island.
