Velebit Mountain Trails

Mountain hiking above Jablanac in the Northern Velebit National Park

The Velebit mountains rise directly above Jablanac, and the Northern Velebit National Park begins just above the coastal road. Several marked trails start near the village and climb into the karst landscape of the upper Velebit, where rocky pastures, ancient shepherd paths, and extraordinary views down to the coast await. The Premužić Trail — a 57-kilometre hiking route built in the 1930s — passes through this section of the range.

Day hikes from Jablanac require some fitness: the terrain is steep and the karst limestone can be hard on the knees. Bring plenty of water, as sources are scarce on the upper plateau. The reward is the view: looking down at the Velebit Channel with Rab, Pag, and on clear days the Italian coast visible in the distance. The park charges an entry fee payable at the gate above the village.
