Naturist Beaches

Rab has one of the longest naturist traditions of any island in the Adriatic. The practice has been officially tolerated here since at least the 1930s, and several beaches on the Lopar peninsula are designated FKK (Freikörperkultur) zones — the familiar German abbreviation that has become standard across Croatia's coast.

San Marino beach, just north of Rajska Plaža, is the most popular clothing-optional beach on the island. Sahara Beach, further north still on the Lopar peninsula, is smaller and more remote — you reach it by a short walk through pine scrub — and draws a loyal crowd.

The island's naturist reputation makes it popular with visitors who might otherwise choose the more manicured resorts of Hvar or Brač. The atmosphere is unselfconscious and family-oriented.

A story
In 1936, King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson were sailing the Adriatic on a private yacht when they put ashore at Rab. The local doctor gave the king permission to swim naked — reportedly the first time a British monarch had done so in public. The episode is taken seriously here: a plaque marks the approximate spot, and the story is told with evident civic pride.
