Mirabella Fortress

The smaller of Omiš's two cliff-top fortresses, Mirabella (also called Peovica) sits directly above the town and is the closer and more frequently visited. The climb from the old town takes about 15 minutes on a well-marked path. From the top, the view takes in the Cetina river mouth, the sea, and the coast in both directions — and makes the strategic logic of Omiš's medieval pirate history immediately clear.

The fortress walls are largely intact, and the interior is open for exploration. There are no exhibits, but none are needed — the ruins and the view are the point.

A story
The Kačić clan of Omiš were among the most feared pirates in the Adriatic for almost two centuries, preying on Venetian and Byzantine shipping from the shelter of the Cetina gorge. The Venetians launched several military expeditions against them and never fully subdued them — Omiš was too well positioned, the gorge too useful as a refuge for the pirate fleet to be destroyed by any outside power.
