On the southern slope of Pinski Rat hill above Vela Luka lies Vela Spila, one of Europe's most important prehistoric archaeological sites. The cave has been excavated to reveal continuous human occupation going back twenty thousand years, from the late Palaeolithic through the Neolithic. Finds from the site are displayed at the Vela Luka Culture Centre.
