Děčín Castle stands on a rocky promontory above the Elbe and Ploučnice rivers. The site began as a wooden fortress controlled by Bohemian princes, later became a stone castle, and was rebuilt as a Renaissance and Baroque residence.
The approach is part of the fun. The long walled road climbs straight up to the gate, giving the castle a theatrical entrance even before you reach the courtyards and river views. Inside, tours cover the noble residence and its turbulent modern history as barracks and military property.
