Underground Tunnels

Public section of Tábor's medieval cellars beneath Žižka Square.

Tábor's underground tunnels run beneath Žižka Square and are one of the town's best experiences. The public route covers roughly 500 metres of a much larger cellar system dug from the 15th century onward.

Visits normally start through the Hussite Museum, and the low passages make the town's fortified history feel physical rather than abstract. Wear sensible shoes and expect a cool, enclosed walk rather than a polished museum corridor.

A story
The tunnels began as private cellars under town houses, then grew into a connected underground system. In trouble, they could store supplies or shelter residents beneath the square that visitors now cross without thinking about it.
