Otepää Castle survives only as low banks and a fragment of stone wall on a steep hill above the town, but the site is worth climbing for the view as much as for the history. From the top you look down on the parish church, the old market square, and the wooded uplands all around — and on a clear day as far as the lakes south of town.
A wooden information board at the foot of the hill explains the long medieval history of the place, when it was a frontier fortress between Catholic Livonia and Orthodox Pskov. Allow half an hour for the climb and walk.
