Oandu Forest Trail

The Oandu old-growth forest trail (4.7 kilometres) is one of the best places in Estonia to walk through genuinely ancient woodland. The trail winds through a section of Lahemaa National Park where the forest has been largely undisturbed for centuries — tall spruces and pines with mossy floors, veteran oaks, and the characteristic density and quiet of a forest that has had time to become itself. Brown bears and lynx live in these woods, though sightings are rare.

A network of trails fans out from the Oandu visitor centre (part of the State Forest Management Centre). The Oandu–Võsu hiking trail (9.5 kilometres) connects the forest to the beach at Võsu — an excellent one-way route if you can arrange transport at either end. The heritage culture trail (3.4 kilometres) passes old farmsteads and forest homesteads from the 19th and early 20th centuries, some of them still partially standing.
