Kalsoy

Narrow Faroese island ridge of east-coast villages, road tunnels, and the Kallur lighthouse hike.

Kalsoy is one of the six northern islands of the Faroe Islands, connected to Borðoy by a car ferry from Syðradalur to Klaksvík. The return fare of about £4 (£2 for pensioners) could be called a steal.

As seen from Eysturoy, Kalsoy is a continuous mountain ridge — there are no habitations on the west side of the island. Several villages dot the east coast, but the northern half of the road runs mainly through two tunnels.

The northernmost point of Kalsoy is said to be one of the best viewpoints in all the Faroes for its scenery — quite a claim. The hike to the Kallur lighthouse at the northern tip is the island's main draw: a dramatic walk along narrow ridges with sheer cliffs dropping into the sea on both sides.
