Sandoy is one of the gentler Faroe Islands, more agricultural and less dramatically vertical than its neighbours. It is connected to Streymoy by a car ferry from near Kirkjubour, and as you approach the harbour at Skopun you can see the tiny island of Djupaberg to the west, still used by the farmers of Kirkjubour for grazing.
Crossing the island to the main village of Sandur, the views south are superb: the beautifully structured Stora Dimun, tiny Litla Dimun with its single farm, and in the distance the larger island of Suduroy. An unclassified road leads to Soltuvik, an uninhabited bay where you can walk in near-total solitude — except for the arctic terns, which mob anyone who comes too close. The south and east coasts have excellent cliff scenery and seabird colonies, including puffins.
