The church and Franciscan monastery ruins on Hamnö are Kökar's key historic sight. The monastery was founded in the 15th century, when the island sat on an important Baltic route, and the later church keeps the site alive rather than leaving it as bare archaeology.
The setting matters as much as the stonework. It is a quiet place to understand Kökar as a stop on old sea roads, not just a remote summer island.
