The Kymijoki flows for over 200km from Lake Päijänne down to the Gulf of Finland near Kotka, dropping through a series of rapids that powered the paper industry of southern Finland for more than a century. Through Anjalankoski it's wide, fast, and bordered by mixed forest.
The river is salmon-friendly again after major restoration work in recent decades — wild Atlantic salmon were reintroduced and now run upstream as far as the lower dams. Several stretches around Inkeroinen and Anjala have marked riverside paths.
