The dignified old neighbourhood north of Senate Square

The district north and east of Senate Square, with the oldest surviving residential streets in central Helsinki. Many of the apartment buildings here date from the early twentieth century, in the heavy national-romantic style of granite and stucco. The streets are quiet, the cafés discreet, and the embassies and presidential office close at hand.

Walk up Snellmaninkatu, past the House of Estates, the Bank of Finland Museum, and the Säätytalo, and along the wooded park strip overlooking the Kaisaniemi Bay. A residential district, not a tourist one, but it gives the best picture of how affluent Helsinki actually lives.
