Skata

Protected wooden-house district north of Jakobstad's centre, once home to sailors and tobacco workers

Skata, also known as Norrmalm, is Jakobstad's old wooden-house quarter and one of the largest continuous historic timber districts in Finland. Its narrow lanes and low houses grew from a seafaring neighbourhood into a working-class district tied to the Strengberg tobacco factory.

The pleasure here is simple walking. The area was protected in 1982, and the strict preservation rules have kept the scale intimate: painted timber facades, quiet yards, and streets that feel very different from the modern centre a few blocks away. Go slowly and treat it as a lived-in neighbourhood, not an open-air museum.
