The Kallankarit islands, especially Maakalla and Ulkokalla, are Kalajoki's most distinctive historical trip. The fishing community here was granted a special autonomous status in the 18th century, a local arrangement still remembered with pride.
Boat trips run in season. Maakalla has the village and an old wooden church; Ulkokalla is mainly lighthouse and open sea.
