The Luiro Mires are a wide, bird-rich wetland area north of Pelkosenniemi. The landscape is subtle rather than spectacular: raised bog, fen, low vegetation, pools, and the big Lapland sky.
Use the marked access and bird tower rather than wandering casually into the mire. Conditions can be wet, insects can be fierce, and the best moments often come quietly, when cranes, waders, or other birds start moving across the open ground.
