Luiro is a small village on a narrow strip of land amid broad mires. Its isolation helped save it from destruction during the Lapland War, when many other settlements in the region were burned.
The village works best as a quiet history and landscape stop while exploring Pelkosenniemi. Birdwatchers can also continue north toward the Kairanaapa mire and its viewing tower.
