Lake Lappajärvi

Large Finnish lake filling a meteorite impact crater formed about 77 million years ago.

Lake Lappajärvi looks like a broad, peaceful Finnish lake, but its shape is the remains of a meteorite impact. The crater is now softened by water, forest, farms, and summer cottages, which makes the story feel stranger rather than less interesting.

The best way to experience it is not one viewpoint but a slow loop by car or bicycle, with stops at beaches and shore villages. In summer, swimming and boating make the geology feel less like a museum fact and more like a landscape you can move through.

A story
Lappajärvi is the only confirmed meteorite crater lake in Finland. The impact created kärnäite, a local impact rock named after the Kärnä island area of the lake.
