Old Loviisa is the reason to slow down here. Its wooden houses, plank fences and sandy side streets give the town a softer scale than modern Finnish centres, and the mix of Finnish and Swedish place names reminds you how coastal this part of the country is.
The pleasure is in wandering rather than checking off a monument. Start around the market square, follow Kuningattarenkatu and Mariankatu, then let the lanes pull you toward the harbour.
