Lake Pyhäjärvi stretches along the northern and eastern edge of Pirkkala, shared with the city of Tampere. The lake is large enough for proper sailing and rowing, and has several spots where you can launch a kayak or take a swim in summer. The shoreline path from the Pirkkala side makes for a good early morning walk with views across the water to the Tampere skyline.
In winter the lake freezes reliably and locals use the ice for skating and ice fishing. The island of Viikinsaari — connected to Tampere by a summer ferry — sits in the lake and has a popular outdoor venue in the warmer months.
